Ultrasonic Inspection Training

Training For Ultrasonic Inspection

A NonDestructive Testing technique used in checking for flaws and structural damage of a building is called ultrasonic inspection. It is where the use of high frequency sound waves are used on materials to detect the surface and below 9the sub surface) of any damage that may have occurred due to weather, period of time or an act of God. In order to become certified in this technique, you must receive proper ultrasonic inspection training. Your training instructor will show you the ins and outs of all the types of common uses for NonDestructive Testing. These courses generally cost around $500 and are sometimes covered by the company you currently work for if it benefits your current position (such as a welder or brick layer, etc.).

The way that ultrasonic testing works is not unlike when a woman goes in for an ultrasound during her pregnancy where the technician needs to see the fetus in the mother’s womb to ensure that it is growing properly and that all of its organs are functioning as they should. The same type of technique is used for a building inspection. Sound waves are sent through the material (metal, concrete, etc.) and the loss of energy (also called attenuation) may be recorded if any type of structural flaw is detected. This flaw could be a crack, porous bubble or structural shift of some sort that is not visible to the naked eye.

The ultrasonic waves are able to detect the severity of the damage within the structure. When you receive your ultrasonic inspection training, you will be taught how to determine whether or not a building is a sound structure, damage free, based on the ultrasonic and other NonDestructive findings. The ultrasonic waves give off a reflection of varying degrees of damage, or if the structure is damage and crack free, resulting in no reflections at all. The monitor of the ultrasonic device records the amount of reflected energy, giving a thorough and straightforward answer to the damage (or lack thereof) of the structure.

The average length of time to receive your certification is not very long at all. On average, you should receive certification in approximately 40 hours, which averages out usually to a 5 day course. This course will give you basic knowledge of NonDestructive Testing techniques including liquid penetrant and ultrasonic.  Your ultrasonic inspection training will cover basic techniques and provide you with basic knowledge regarding ultrasonic inspection, immersion and different product forms such as plate and weldments. Those who should consider taking this course are NDT technicians, welding inspectors, auditors, engineers, quality control personnel and anyone else who wishes to enhance and improve their skills in this area of work.
